Strike in Tamil Nadu

There are two aspects about the recent strike by the Tamil Nadu Government employees that cannot be missed. There is a general perception in the State that Government staff are adequately paid. But many people are not satisfied about the quality of services provided by government employees at every level.

Thus, the strike by the Tamil Nadu Government employees does not enjoy any sort of public support or sympathy.

Further, the public in the State are, by and large, convinced that the State's finances are in a mess and that the State has to conserve resources to carry out its obligations to the citizens.

But the State Government has conducted itself in an autocratic manner in putting down the strike.

Dismissing striking employees is, again, a negative way of dealing with the strike situation, and unbecoming of a democratic society.

Further, recruiting employees for a government department without adopting the required procedures, on arbitrary salary basis is not only bad in principle but also set up a bad precedence.

Those in charge should take decisions with more foresightedness instead of treating such issues like a "street fight".

One cannot but feel that a severe blow has been dealt to the system of administration in Tamil Nadu in the last few days.
