Customs waiver on power

This is with reference to "All power projects may get customs waiver" (Business Line, June 15).

The possible decision to waive customs duty for all power projects regardless of capacity will lower the production cost and the consumer will be benefited, if the State electricity boards are prepared to pass on the relief. Now, with the introduction of a new power policy, almost all the States are thinking of hiking power charges.

So, any concession offered to the power generating units should be with the precondition that the consumer should be benefited to that extent. Otherwise, there is no point in losing the money from the public exchequer.

The Power Ministry should think on similar terms with a view to reduce the burden on power. This is essential not only for the benefit of domestic consumers, but also to ensure sustenance of all types of industries, which face threats of closure on account of power crises.
