Star Alliance to source more IT services from India

Ashwini Phadnis

NEW DELHI, June 11

STAR Alliance, the 16 airline global alliance, is keen on sourcing more IT services from India.

The Alliance's Chief Information Officer and Vice-President (Information and Project Management), Mr Michael Stagl, told Business Line that not only was India a cost-effective and highly qualified market, but it was a very flexible market in the IT sector.

"The Alliance is keen to have agreements with a limited number of companies to do work. The idea is to help our members create additional revenues and save costs," he added.

The Alliance has been looking at out sourcing as one of the ways to keep costs low while providing a whole host of products to facilitate not only the 16 airlines members but also their passengers.

It is looking for a wide variety of products in diverse fields ranging from operations, reservation, departure control systems to post-ravel products.

The Alliance includes Air Canada, Asiana, Air New Zealand, ANA, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, and United Airlines.

It carries more than 300 million passenger annually and its member airlines serve 128 countries.

While 10 per cent of the work of Star Alliance is sourced from India, the percentage rises when it comes to the IT sector, Alliance officials said.

Many of the grouping's members also outsource work from the country.

Alliance officials said that the growing interest in the Indian market has nothing to do with the possibility of either Air India, Indian Airlines or Jet Airways joining the Alliance.

It already has a tie-up with Techspan, which recommended a platform for the content management system that can scale to meet the client's medium and long-term content requirements.
