AP Govt urged to crack down on quacks

HYDERABAD, June 11

CLOSE on the heels of its campaign against the fish medicine distribution in Hyderabad that was believed to heal asthma, the Andhra Pradesh Chapter of Federation of Atheist Rationalist Humanist Association (FARA) has alerted the State Government on the de-recognition of 12 alternative therapies by the Union Health Ministry.

In a memorandum submitted to the State Principal Secretary, the Federation wanted "the State Government to swing into action immediately to stop the practice of fake doctors and bogus claims so that innocent patients may not be victimised any longer."

The federation has brought to the notice of the State Government that a large number of practitioners were involved in these derecognised 12 alternative therapies in the State.

According to the federation, the Union Health Ministry derecognised the alternative therapies based on the findings of an expert committee of Indian Medical Council Research, New Delhi.

The alternative therapies derecognised by the Union Government include Reiki (Japanese origin), Acupuncture (Chinese origin), Pranik Healing, Electropathy, Electro-Homeopathy, Magneto Therapy, Urine Therapy, Auto Urine Therapy, Reflexology, Music Therapy, Aroma Therapy, Gem and Stone Therapy, Hypnotherapy and Colour Therapy.

According to the Federation, the Union Health Ministry clearly stated that no degrees or diplomas should be issued by any institute on these derecognised therapies. No one should put the prefix `doctor' who hitherto practiced these therapies.
