SSI Bengal mulls policy to boost small-scale sector Our Bureau
KOLKATA, June 11 THE West Bengal Government is contemplating working out a policy to support the cottage and small-scale industry for technological development. This was announced by Mr Bansa Gopal Chowdhury, Minister for Small-Scale Industries, while addressing the members of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry at a seminar on `Sustainable partnership - a go-ahead for industry & technology revolution'. According to the Minister, the small-scale sector is facing a severe crisis with the opening up of the economy. He urged the small-scale sector representatives to concentrate more on developing the technology used in their individual units. "Instead of regularly trying to increase productivity to meet the pressing demands of a competitive market, I would request all of you to think of changing the technology. In the long run, it will be beneficial for your organisation'', Mr Chowdhury said. He said the State Government was contemplating working out a scheme for helping the small-scale industry in upgrading its technological status. Dr Samir Bhattacharya, Director of Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, said there was hardly any synergy between industry and academic institutions. He felt that the expertise and innovative aptitude of academic institutions could be good capital for industrialists. Mr A.N. Basu, Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University, felt that liberalisation had affected technological development in the country. Constraints in the supply of global technology could act as an incentive to help institutions to develop indigenous technology.
