CHENNAI: The Tamilnadu Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation (Aavin) has launched a new range of flavoured milk here .

Mr S. Ramachandran, Minister for Dairy Development, and Mr B.K. Prasad, Managing Director, Aavin, formally launched the sterilised flavoured milk that is sold in 200 ml disposable glass bottles. Named "aavin `n' rich", the bottle costs Rs 10 and comes in five flavours. The bottled flavoured milk supplements Aavin's existing range of flavoured milk that is sold in tetra packs.

An Aavin media release said that the "new bottle type pack is aimed to lure the younger crowd who believe in seeing the product they consume".

According to Mr Prasad, a recent survey conducted by Aavin indicated a significant market for health-oriented beverages. In Chennai, he estimated, the market size to be 40,000-50,000 bottles a day for health-oriented drinks.

The bottled milk had a shelf life of about 45 days. The milk had 3 per cent fat, and 8.5 per cent Solid Non Fat (SNF) that yielded 186 kilocalories, said the Aavin release.

The manner in which the milk was processed was "more or less similar" to the method by which the tetra pack milk was processed, said Mr Prasad. A glass bottle may cost about Rs 1.60- 1.80. In the wake of the improved financial situation, Aavin was looking at export opportunities, he said.
