`Elements of Kerala' to woo tourists

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, June 11

TOURISM combined with an opportunity to assist the needy just about sums up a new tour package developed by the city-based Jayasree Travels and Tours Co.

Branded `Elements of Kerala', the seven-day package is structured in such a way that $5 from the $365 paid by each customer goes to charity, said Mr K.S. Vikraman, the company's Managing Director. This is a small attempt to assist the underprivileged, he added.

Launched in association with Kovalam Hotels, Le Meridien Kochi and the Kumarakom Lake Resort, the package offers visitors an opportunity to experience "all the essential elements of Kerala", he said. In fact, the package is an attempt to create a branded tourism product for Kerala, Mr Vikraman said.

Such tourism products that offer visitors a superior experience at an affordable price are essential if Kerala is to compete with other Asian destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, he pointed out.

Targeted at both the domestic and the international markets, the `Elements' package takes visitors to Kovalam beach near Thiruvananthapuram and also to Kochi. Besides, it also offers them an overnight stay on a houseboat and an opportunity to experience Kerala's backwaters.

According to Mr Vikraman, the package is flexible and customers can adapt it to suit their tastes. Besides discounts on food, beverages and ayurvedic massages, the package also offers customers the use of an air-conditioned car for their use for the duration of the trip.

As part of its efforts to cater to niche tourism markets, the company has also developed a special package for bird lovers. To be launched in September this year, the package is offered in association with a leading Sri Lankan tour operator that specialises in organising bird watching tours to Sri Lanka. Periyar, Munnar and Nilambur are some of the areas that have been identified for the package.
