Tobacco exports pegged at Rs 980 cr

NEW DELHI, June 11

THE Tobacco Board has projected tobacco and tobacco product exports to touch 1.15 lakh tonnes during 2003-04. This performance is expected to result in value realisation of about Rs 980 crore during the current financial year, official sources said.

The projected performance for 2003-04 is almost in line with the export performance registered during the financial year 2002-03. In the Tenth Plan period, the projected figures are 6,86,300 tonnes valued at Rs 5,769 crore. India is currently the world's 2nd largest producer of tobacco next to China. Indian tobacco is exported to more than 80 countries. Tobacco and tobacco product exports during 2001-02 stood at Rs 888.50 crore (1,02,086 tonnes).

In the total exports of tobacco items from the country, un-manufactured tobacco accounts for 80 to 85 per cent and the manufactured tobacco products account for 15 to 20 per cent. In the un-manufactured tobacco exports, Flue Cured Virginia tobacco is the single largest item accounting for 75 to 80 per cent of the tobacco exports.
