Philips India plans LCD computer monitor plant

CHENNAI, June 5

PHILIPS is exploring the possibility of having an LCD (liquid crystal display) personal computer monitor assembly plant in India, Mr Sanjay Maheswari, All India Distribution-PCP, Consumer Electronics Division, Philips India Ltd, told reporters here.

"While testing is going on in the country, it is too early to provide any further information including the location and the likely investment in the plant. You will hear something (setting up of the plant) in three or four months,'' he said. In India, Philips has television production plants.

According to Mr Maheswari, Philips India currently imports LCD monitors from countries such as China and Taiwan by paying about 38 per cent basic customs duty. "With a significant growth expected in the sales of LCD monitors in India, Philips is exploring the possibility of having an LCD monitor assembly plant in the country," he said.

Philips India has launched Philips 150P LF3 LCD LightFrame PC monitors in the country. The new monitors have an ultra slim bezel of 18 mm width - about half the industry average - and front-to-back depth of 52mm due to its embedded power supply. The 150P is prized at Rs 28,000 he said.

Quoting IDC data, Mr Maheswari said that while the Indian LCD PC monitor market size was about 8,000 per month, the company is targeting 25-30 per cent market share in a few months. The major competitors for Philips in the LCD monitor segment included Samsung, he said.
