Indian Airlines offers Smart Apex fares now

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, June 4

INDIAN Airlines (IA) on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of the Advance Purchase Excursion (Apex) fares which were available up to 15 days before the date of departure from June 7 and replaced them with Smart Apex fares which offer discounted fares on as many as 55 sectors for seats booked seven and 21 days before departure.

The new schemes will be applicable for travel in economy class only and a passenger can buy either a one-way or a return ticket.

While IA officials were tightlipped on the exact number of seats, which will be available under the two schemes, they indicated that a "reasonable" number of seats would be available to meet passenger demand.

The new schemes are to remain in force till March 31, 2004.

The scheme could work out to be a major financial saving for those availing of them. A passenger flying between Mumbai-Cochin and booking the ticket 21 days before departure will pay Rs 2,740 while a passenger booking seven days before the journey starts will pay Rs 4,770 for travel on the same route.

Similarly, a passenger booking 21 days in advance will pay Rs 3,710 for a one-way ticket on the Delhi-Chennai sector while a passenger booking a week in advance will pay Rs 7,390. A one-way ticket on the Delhi-Cochin sector booked three-weeks in advance will cost Rs 6,815 while those booking a week in advance will have to pay Rs 9,865.

In a statement the airline has said that the scheme which will be on sale from June 7 will be valid for travel effective June 14 for passengers availing of Smart Apex 7.

Similarly, for passengers availing of Smart Apex 21 the travel will become effective from June 28 this year.

The airline has also said that any change in booking from Apex tickets booked 15 days prior to departure to either the new Smart Apex 7 or Smart Apex 21 will be permitted without payment of any cancellation charges.

However, the passenger will either be refunded the difference in fare or will have to pay the excess amount chargeable to them for shifting from one scheme to another.

Meanwhile, the airline also announced that from June 7 the Apex scheme was being withdrawn from five sectors including Delhi-Aurangabad, Delhi-Calicut, Mumbai-Lucknow, Mumbai-Patna, and Mumbai-Pune.

However, the airline has introduced Smart Apex fares on several sectors including Mumbai-Vadodara, Hyderabad-Vizag, Bangalore-Coimbatore, Mumbai-Bhuj, Mumbai-Rajkot and Delhi-Chandigarh.
