ECIL in pact for smart card solution

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: To provide indigenous smart card-based solutions, the Hyderabad-based Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) and the Bangalore-based Society for Integrated Circuit Technology and Applied Research (SITAR) have joined hands.

While SITAR will provide the high-end integrated circuits (ICs) for multiple applications, ECIL would do the systems integration depending on the application and need of the customer, according to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed here.

One of the major applications of the smart card in the Indian context is the proposed national citizen ID card. The MoU assumes significance, as ECIL will be sourcing from local vendors for the first time application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for use in the manufacture of its smart card-based systems.

Commenting on the exclusive tie-up with SITAR, the Managing Director of ECIL, Mr V.H. Ron, said, "Smart card-based systems are finding applications in information, identification, security and access systems and increasingly in the field of e-governance."
