Hanuman-ean task

Bijoy Ghosh

A 36-foot high idol of Hanuman being transported by Larsen & Toubro's ECC division in Chennai from a workshop near the city on Wednesday. The 67-tonne idol of Panchamukha Anjaneya, in the five forms of Narasimha, Varaha, Garuda and Hayagriva, was sculpted by Padmashri Muthiah Sthapathi and his team. With the help of huge supporting trestles and four powerful jacks, capable of lifting 100 tonnes each, the ECC team slung cables under the idol and placed it on a 26-wheel trailer which would take over 15 hours to travel 140 kms to the site of a new temple coming up near Pondicherry. Around 40 sculptors worked on a single granite slab of 150 tonnes for two years to carve out the idol.
