Climate & Weather AP: Central relief for victims of heat wave sought Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, June 3 WITH the State facing an unprecedented and a prolonged heat wave that has left over 1000 people dead and scores of others needing medical attention, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has written a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr A.B.Vajpayee, seeking Central assistance to victims under the National Calamity Relief Fund. Mr Naidu wrote, "Andhra Pradesh, as you know, is undergoing severe drought conditions for the second consecutive year. For the last three weeks, the State is passing through very severe heat wave conditions. Non-receipt of monsoon showers in time had added to the heat wave conditions which is worst of its sort for the last three weeks." In spite of precautionary measures taken by the State Government, it was unfortunate that 1065 persons have died in AP due to the severe heat wave conditions. It was unfortunate that no assistance under the Calamity Relief Fund is possible to be extended to the dependents of the persons who died due to severe heat wave conditions. The State is not in a position to extend any relief to the bereaved family members, he said. "As a measure of solace to the bereaved family members, I request that an amount of Rs 50,000 each may please be sanctioned for all persons who have died due to severe heat wave conditions in the State of AP," he has written. The drought-hit districts of Nalgonda has accounted for nearly 200 deaths and East Godavari a little over 150.
