NEW DELHI, June 3

KARNATAKA continues to be the largest software exporting State in the country, having raked in Rs 12,350 crore during 2002-03, according to data released by Software Technology Parks of India (STPI).

Software exports from STPI units in Karnataka grew by 25 per cent in the year.

Tamil Nadu came second with exports of Rs 6,305 crore, registering a growth of 26 per cent, the STPI Director-General, Mr S.N. Zindal, said on Tuesday.

Maharashtra stood third with exports of Rs 5,508 crore, followed by Andhra Pradesh (Rs 3,638 crore), Haryana (Rs 2,734 crore) and Uttar Pradesh (Rs 2,514 crore).

In terms of growth, West Bengal topped the list with exports surging by 99 per cent to Rs 1,200 crore. Kerala lagged way behind with just four per cent growth and exports worth Rs 165 crore.

The 3,500-odd software exporting STPI units functioning from 39 locations across the country accounted for about 80 per cent of India's software exports during the year, Mr Zindal said.

In the context of the panic created in the Indian industry and media about the increasing number of anti-outsourcing Bills in the US, the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, said they would not have any immediate impact on the performance of the industry.
