Railways Foundation laid for Delhi Metro Rail Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, June 3 THE Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, laid the foundation stone of the Barakhamba Road-Dwarka section of Delhi Metro here on Tuesday. The 22.8-km stretch of the Metro is part of the ongoing first phase of the Rs 10,500-crore project and the line is scheduled to be completed by September 2005. It is expected to solve the transport problems of West and South West Delhi residents. The project is being executed by the Delhi Metro Transport Corporation (DMRC), a 50:50 joint venture between the Delhi and the Union Governments. The new line will have 22 railway stations of which two will be underground. It would later be extended 6.5 km into Dwarka Subcity at a cost of Rs 320 crore, which would be provided by the DDA. The Japanese Government, which is funding a large part of the project, was represented by the country's Ambassador to India, Mr Akira Hayashi. Mr Hayashi won the hearts of the audience by speaking in Hindi on the occasion. The Delhi Lt Governor, Mr Vijai Kapoor, and the Chief Minister, Ms Shiela Dikshit, were present at the ceremony held at Shivaji Enclave in Raja Garden area. The Union Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Ananth Kumar, presided over the function. The Labour Minister, Mr Sahib Singh Verma, the Minister of State for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Pon Radhakrishnan, and the DMRC Chairman, Mr Madan Lal Khurana, were also present on the occasion.
