Samsung seeks to bridge digital divide

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 26

SAMSUNG Electronics today announced the launch of its single largest social programme outside Korea — "Samsung DigitAll Hope".

Through this programme, the company will donate $6,00,000 to organisations supporting the "use of technology to improve the lives of youth and helping to bridge the digital divide".

Samsung is launching the youth-themed programme in eight Asian countries — India, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.

Organisations such as NGOs and other youth-oriented organisations will be invited to apply for the programme. According to Mr R. Zutshi, Director, Samsung India, around 4-5 projects will be short-listed from India and sent to the regional panel. The panel will then shortlist around 1-2 projects from each country.

Samsung has sought consultations from National Youth Agencies throughout the region and UNESCAP to identify organisations matching Samsung's 2003 programme objectives.

According to Mr Zutshi, Samsung has been supporting sports and educational projects since 1995 and has also set up `Digital Adventure' in Mumbai and Delhi to educate youth in new technologies.
