The Hindu Business Line : Madurai Corpn embarks on modernisation drive

THE Madurai Corporation and the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) have joined together in an exercise in which the administration of the Corporation is to be toned up, utilising the modern technologies — Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS) Digital Image Processing of Remote Sensing Data — offered by the University.

Under the agies of `CORP-GIS', a project undertaken by the MKU, at a cost of Rs 16.95 lakh, the Corporation will put to use the latest technology to have a foolproof tab on rabid urbanisation, population inflow, utility services, emergency services, tax collection system, management of natural and human resources and expedite decision taking process.

The funds for the project, to be completed in nine months' time, has been provided as grant by the Tamilnadu Urban Development Fund (TNUDF).

The project, a study aided by Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System and `Total Station', is to be executed by the Department of Futures Studies, MKU.

While GIS will be useful as a data handling tool with high capability to handle and process both map (spatial) and tabular (non-spatial) data and thereby helping to achieve better urban planning and development, remote sensing will be undertaken with metre special resolution from the US-based IKONOS satellite.

Total Station survey complements GPS survey, particularly in capturing features of tall buildings with narrow lane, thick vegetation etc.

Sixty-five kinds of spatial data, proposed to be covered under this project, include elevation, road network pedestrian lane, ATM, water collection point, culverts, petrol pump, school, police station, health station and post-office.

The project envisages, by bringing ground conditions across the table and addressing geo-informatics-related problems, to provide ways to minimise expenditure by optimising both human and natural resources and maximise income.

By acquiring the data, the Corporation will be in a better position to execute its development tasks on a calculated basis.

Administration of the city with such technical expertise is sure to bring down red tapism and corruption to a large extent, the Corporation Commissioner, Mr A. Karthik, told presspersons, in a meet here to explain the project.

Mr P.K. Ponnuswamy, Vice-Chancellor, MKU, said that the University has subsidised the project by nearly Rs 2 lakh, to bring down the cost of the project.
