`Farmers incur loss due to Bt cotton'

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: A study by Greenpeace in three districts of Karnataka — Raichur, Dharwad and Haveri — has shown that farmers who cultivated Bt cotton had suffered huge losses.

About 77 per cent of the farmers interviewed complained that bollworm affected the Bt cotton plants, according to Greenpeace.

Besides increase in pesticide and fertiliser costs, the farmers sustained a rise in labour costs as well, it is reported. Karnataka has the second largest area under Bt cotton cultivation at 16,950 acres.
