New food law soon: Minister

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, April 16

THE Union Government is seriously planning to come out with a comprehensive new food law shortly.

Stating this at a National Seminar on Food Processing Industry here on Wednesday, the Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industry, Mr N.T. Shanmugham, said the Government had already formed a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the issue.

"Much of progress was already achieved in this direction and we expect the new law to become reality shortly. It would be a simple, single and rationalised food law. Apart from enabling the authorities to act quick on various industry related matters, the new law would also equip the regulators to initiate stern action against the offenders," the Minister said.

The Minister said the Indian food processing industry was fully geared to exploit the opportunities thrown open to it by the WTO regime.
