Roadways Truckers' strike hits major ports Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, April 16 TRANSPORTERS strike has affected exports and imports at the country's major ports and the situation could worsen if the strike prolonged. "With truckers keeping off the roads, the exports have been hit," a Shipping Ministry official said. Whereas, import cargo coming through containers are getting piled at the major ports for want of trucks to evacuate the cargo. "The container terminals at major ports have a certain capacity to store cargo. If the strike prolongs, the ports will have a problem on their hands," the official said. This will also have an impact on the shipping services. "If a ship comes with 1,000 containers to any major port, it will have to sail back with 1,000 containers. But, non-availability of containers due to the truckers' strike, the ships will have to sail back empty," the official said. The ships will also have to incur huge demurrage charges if it waits for cargo to materialise.
