Review of food adulteration scheme mooted

P.T. Jyothi Datta

NEW DELHI, April 11

EVEN as the pesticide-residue issue that rattled the bottled water industry in the not-so-distant past remains to be completely resolved, a Standing Committee report has recommended an "overall review" of the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) programme.

"The committee is left with no alternative but to believe that the situation is indeed very grim so far as implementation of the PFA Act is concerned. With the load of so many disease control programmes, this aspect of health management is not getting the due impetus from any State in the country," the report observed. The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee's report, recently tabled in the Rajya Sabha, recommended that the PFA programmes be reviewed with an accent on State laboratories — "more labs and necessary staff, therefore, should be initiated without further delay."

Meanwhile, according to the Union Health Ministry, efforts have been initiated to supply equipment to State labs, instead of funds. "She state labs are being audited and... a capacity-building project has been proposed to the World Bank for assistance which will provide further facilities to State laboratories.
