Tirupur back in Coimbatore Excise purview

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE, April 11

TIRUPUR Central Excise/Customs division, hitherto operating under the Salem Central Excise commissionerate has been remerged with the Coimbatore Central Excise Commissionerate with immediate effect.

The remerger of the Tirupur Central Excise/Customs divisions with the Coimbatore Commissionerate, a pending demand by the trade and industry of Tirupur has been done through a Central Excise non-tariff notice issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs dated April 9, according to the sources in the Central Excise department here.

Along with the remerger, the customs formations operating in the Inland Container Depot and the Container Freight Station at Tirupur too stand transferred to the Coimbatore Commissionerate's jurisdiction.

The Tirupur Central Excise/customs division originally attached to the Coimbatore Commissionerate was shifted to the Salem Commissionerate following the bifurcation of the Coimbatore Commissionerate into Coimbatore and Salem in November 2002.

With the remerger of Tirupur with Coimbatore, the Coimbatore Commissionerate would have six excise divisions and the Salem Commissionerate will have Salem-1, Salem-2, Erode and Coonoor divisions. The Dharapuram Excise range, which formed part of Tirupur division, would however remain with the Salem Commissionerate.
