TN okays plan for law college near Chennai

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, April 11

THE Tamil Nadu Government has approved the Dr Ambedkar Law University's proposal to set up a law college near Chennai, said the Minister for Law, Mr D. Jayakumar in the Assembly today.

Moving the demand for grants for the law department, Mr Jayakumar said that the law college would come up at Chinglepet or at a location close by. The college will commence operation in the academic year 2003-04, and will be affiliated to the Dr Ambedkar Law University in Chennai.

The decision follows the upgrading of the then Dr Ambedkar Law College in Chennai to a University. Therefore, there were now no colleges in the vicinity to offer 3-year and 5-year law degrees. The Government would earmark land for the college and the infrastructure would be set up with the University's own resources, he said. The Government has earmarked land for the law school, which was set up by the university in 2002-03.
