Shipping Mumbai Port traffic up Our Bureau
MUMBAI, April 8 A SLEW of measures aimed at improving productivity and integrating cargo handling operations has helped Mumbai Port to stem the decline in throughput. The port handled a cargo throughput of 26.75 million tonnes (mt) in the just ended fiscal, which was marginally higher than the throughput of 26.43 mt recorded in the previous year. The port was also able to notch up an operating surplus of Rs 1.5 crore against a deficit in 2001-02. While the inflow of liquid, break bulk and bulk cargoes registered an increase, the container traffic fell from 2.54 lakh TEUs in 2001-02 to 2.13 lakh TEUs last fiscal. According to a senior port official, the port had introduced several incentives and cost saving measures, including 10 free days for clearance of import cargo, 30 free days for aggregation of export cargo, longer storage on nominal rent, volume discount schemes for ships and reduction in ICD box charges.
