Performance Tata Engg 2002-03 sales up 20% Our Bureau
MUMBAI, April 8 TATA Engineering has recorded its highest-ever annual sale of vehicles of 2,19,860 units (including exports) for the year ended March 31, 2003. This represents a growth of 19.9 per cent over the previous year when 1,83,224 vehicles were sold. Export sales for the year stood at 8,007 units. In March 2003, the company sold 27,547 vehicles. Exports were at 1,121 units during this month. Commercial vehicle sales for the year grew by 30.1 per cent to 1,07,442 units (82,564 vehicles). Medium and heavy commercial vehicles sales were at 74,323, up by 31.1 per cent, while light commercial vehicle sales grew by 28 per cent to 33,119 units. In March 2003, commercial vehicle sales stood at 12,011 units. For March 2003, the company had a record sale of 14,415 passenger vehicles, up by 19 per cent over the year-ago period. For the full year period, passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,04,411 numbers, up by 17.5 per cent, going past the 1 lakh mark for the first time. "It retained its No 2 position in domestic sales in a 13-player vehicle industry for the third time in the past four years with an estimated market share of 14.7 per cent against 13.1 per cent last fiscal," the company said in a news release. The upturn in sales of passenger vehicles was despite the closure of the car plant in April and May of 2002. In March 2003, the company sold 8,402 cars of Indica brand and ended the year with a total sale of 72,712 vehicles. As for Indigo, the company sold 2,429 cars in March 2003. In the three-month period since its launch, the car has acquired a 26 per cent share in a segment comprising 10 other brands. Total sales of Indigo were at 6,813 units.
