Self-regulatory plan by news channels

Nithya Subramanian

NEW DELHI, April 7

THE television coverage of the terrorist siege on Akshardham drew a lot of flak from the Government especially with the Information & Broadcasting Minister openly criticising the manner in which television channels dealt with the issue.

Hence, news channels have decided to come together to formulate a code of conduct to be followed by them especially while covering sensitive events.

"All news channels will have to adhere to a model code of conduct," said an official in a news channel. Internationally too, news channels follow a voluntary code of conduct, a practice Indian channels seem willing to imbibe.

"Instead of the Government setting up a regulatory body, we would prefer a self-regulatory environment," said the official.
