Tirupur tops in race for excise registration

COIMBATORE, April 1

TIRUPUR has accounted for the highest number of applications received for registration with the Central Excise authorities on the first day of excise registration, which opened here today under the modified excise rules for the textiles and textiles goods.

Tirupur office coming under the Salem Excise Commissionerate has recorded 146 applications including 25 from individual manufacturers for excise registration, according to Mr Krishnamurthy, Chief Commissioner Excise and Customs, Coimbatore zone.

The textile trade/manufacturers are required to apply and get registered under the Central Excise rules as the amended excise rules for the textiles and textile articles comes into force from Tuesday.

Applications received in Coimbatore on the first day were 15, whereas the number for Salem was 11.

The powerloom town of Erode, where the powerloom weavers are up in arms against `cenvat' duty and decided to boycott excise registration has accounted for a lone application.

The Madurai Commissionerate which includes Dindigul division has received 18 applications on the opening day, the official said.
