`US, EU should remove hurdles to Cancun meet'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Feb. 18

INDIA has made it clear to the developed countries, especially to the US and the European Union that the onus of removing the roadblocks to the Cancun WTO Ministerial Conference in September this year is entirely on them.

Briefing newspersons on the outcome of the recently held Tokyo mini-Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Arun Jaitley, said that India has highlighted that "the road to Cancun is riddled with roadblocks and potholes".

"At the final session of the Tokyo Conference, we have made it amply clear that it is for the developed countries to win back the trust of developing countries. The developing countries should be able to see tangible benefits in multiple areas such as TRIPs, special and differential treatment, and implementation issues and also a reduction in the agricultural subsidies of the developed countries", Mr Jaitley said.

He said that India had at the final session of the meeting made a case for allowing the country to calibrate its own tariffs, given that "our agricultural tariffs have a direct impact on the lives of farmers".
