MUMBAI, Feb. 18

THE SKF group, leading player in roller bearings and seals, has chosen India as the venue for setting up its global development centre for services relating to two-wheelers.

"Out of the 24 million two-wheelers globally, 20 million are produced in Asia. This is the reason why we have chosen to set up our development centre in Asia, in India," Mr. Guiseppe Donato, President, SKF Electrical Division, said.

The centre being set up in Bangalore will be involved with application, solutions design and product testing, Mr Rakesh Makhija, Managing Director, SKF Bearings India Ltd, said. SKF Bearings India Ltd offers engineering products, solutions and services to the automotive engineering and electrical sectors.

"Looking at the service market is the future for us," he said.

For the Indian arm, the strategic direction ahead involves capturing the service market, involving in product development and eliminating the commodity trap, according to Mr Makhija.

Going forward, SKF Bearings India is looking at new businesses in the area of service, trading, electronics and partnership, acronymed as STEP, Mr Makhija said.

According to Mr Tom Johnstone, Executive Vice-President, SKF, the group has identified some key actions for 2003. These include bringing more customised production and solution; expand maintenance and end-user; penetrate growth markets in Asia and Central and Eastern Europe; support growth strategy through selected acquisitions and recruitment; expand e-commerce and customer communication through Internet and increase productivity and speed in factories.
