"At that price (Rs 1.45 lakh), it is a steal," said Ms Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Joint Managing Director.

MUMBAI, Feb. 18

THE Kinetic Aquila cruiser bike had its formal market launch here today with an on-road price tag of Rs 1.45 lakh, making it the costliest motorcycle in the country.

"At that price it is a steal," Ms Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Joint Managing Director, Kinetic Engineering Ltd (KEL), said at a news conference. Hyosung of Korea, KEL's collaborator in motorcycles and the Aquila's manufacturer, supplies the bikes at a special price to KEL in CKD form at 35 per cent import duty.

Imported otherwise by customers, a 250cc cruiser like the Aquila will merit 65 per cent import duty on its maximum retail price abroad hiking on-road price here to at least Rs 3 lakh, she said.

KEL had originally planned to import 100 Aquilas, but following good customer response that number is being doubled. All Aquila owners get personalised service from KEL, which will back up the cruiser with warranty, spares and after-sales service.

The Aquila will be sold in only five cities - Mumbai, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Bangalore and Pune.

Besides the cruiser, KEL has plans to launch a 165cc bike with 4-valve engine under its GF series, develop a family of city bikes for the GF series and introduce a new motorcycle for urban commuting, work on which is codenamed `Project Velocity.'

"All this will be encased in a brand called Kinetic Biking," Ms Motwani said.
