33 cos visit BIM for campus recruitment

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, Feb. 18

THERE has been a significant increase in the number of companies visiting the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Tiruchi, for 2003 campus recruitment.

So far, 33 companies have visited the campus with 63 per cent of the class placed by the first week of February 2003. This was compared to only 14 companies visiting the campus last year with 83 per cent of the class recruited.

Incidentally, this year 20 companies were new at BIM, the institute's Director, Dr. N. Jayasankaran, told mediapersons.

Current year's average salary was Rs 3.25 lakh per annum compared to Rs 3.20 lakh last year. The highest salary this year was Rs 7.5 lakh given to the school topper.

Despite the increased number of companies visiting the campus, the recruitment market was quite sluggish this year, he added.

Some of the companies visiting the campus this year include A.F. Ferguson, Mind Tree, IBM (PricewaterhouseCoopers), Tata Consultancy Services, Ramco Sytems, Bajaj Allianz, Global Trust Bank, TVS Group, Dr Reddy's Foundation, and P&O Nedlloyd.

According to Dr Jayasankaran, this year companies have delayed their recruitment as they are yet to firm up their recruitment plans. Usually, every year, the placement would be in December and the entire recruitment process would be completed in a week. However, this year campus recruitment has stretched to over three months, he added.

A few more companies expected to visit the campus in February and March include NEG Micon, Indica Research, Indian Airlines, TATA AIG and Cairn Energy, he said.

Meanwhile, BIM students in association with CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) would conduct the annual human resources event, Strategix 2003, on February 23 at the institute campus. The event would discuss the evolving trends of "change management" — pursuing new horizons, said event organisers.

Mr T. Kannan, Chairman, CII-Southern Region and Managing Director, Thiagarajar Mills would inaugurate the event. Lead speakers in the event would include Mr N.S. Iyer, General Manager, HR, Asian Paints, Ms Padma Kiran Rao, Vice-President, HR, iLabs, and Mr L. Selvam George, General Manager, HR, Birla3M.
