Pvt co mooted to implement Madurai apparel park project

Our Correspondent

MADURAI, Feb.18

THE eligible beneficiaries of the proposed apparel park in Madurai were advised to promote a private company to carry out the implementation process.

At a discussion on the proposed park, organised by the Madurai Textile Exporters' Association (MTEA), here, the Commissioner, Handloom Textiles, Ms Leena Nair, said the company should identify a suitable land and buy it on its own to avoid delay in establishing the park.

The Union Government would contribute of Rs 10 crore for infrastructure, Rs 5 crore for effluent treatment plant and exhibition hall and Rs 2 crore towards training and upgradation of technology.

The State Government or the beneficiaries will have to contribute 25 per cent towards infrastructure.

Ms Nair clarified that the park need not be located in one place and could be set up in two different locations.

This would help in overcoming the difficulty in identifying nearly 150 acres of land, with ample water source and away from agricultural operations. She clarified that the scheme would focus on encouraging parallel apparel manufacturing units producing goods of international standards. Only existing exporters and those who want to export their goods are eligible beneficiaries, she said.

Stating that those units producing goods meant for domestic consumption are not eligible, she said the park is meant to strengthen the country's apparel exports. Due importance would be given for employment generation and technological upgradation, she added.

Ms Nair noted that the park could be split into two — dry processing and wet processing — and developed at the earliest according to feasibility. The State Government would help in getting clearance from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, she mentioned.

The District Collector, Mr S. Ramachandran, stressed the importance of having research and development units. The president of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr S. Rethinavelu, and the secretary of MTEA, Mr K.P.S. Selvaraj, also participated.
