Social Welfare Agencies roped in for mid-day meal scheme Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Feb. 18 THE Andhra Pradesh Government has adopted a flexible decentralised approach by involving self-help groups (SHGs) and community-based organisations in rural areas and community development societies in the urban areas to ensure the success of the ambitious Rs 250-crore mid-day meal scheme. Mr Mandava Venkateshwara Rao, Minister for School Education, on Tuesday said in addition to the rice component that is being made available by the Government of India, the State Government initially decided to provide Rs1.25 per day per child towards preparation of food and creation of infrastructure for cooking, which includes creation of rasoi ghar's or community kitchens. Further, based on the feedback from the field, the scheme, that seeks to cover 75 lakh children in the classes I to VII in primary and upper primary schools, has been restructured. This is planned to be addressed by constituting number of committees at school, panchayat, mandal, municipal, district and State level to monitor and supervise implementation of the programme. The matter was taken up for discussion in the State Assembly following some criticism about its implementation and difficulties faced by schools.
