THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb. 4

TRIVANDRUM International School (TIS), which is largely non-resident funded, will now be headed by Ms Elizabeth Moir, a former IBM systems analyst and founder-head of three international schools.

She will be the Executive Director and Head of School.

An accomplished pianist and flautist and an Oxford Blue in tennis, Ms Moir was the Head of the Mathematics Department in Diocesan Girls School in Hong Kong and the Governor of the British School in New Delhi, according to Mr G. Vijaya Raghavan, Honorary Director, TIS.

Ms Moir was also founder-Principal of Colombo International School, founder, resident trustee and Head of School of the British School in Colombo and Head of School of Elizabeth Moir School.

She will have the mandate to create, lead and sustain what the State's "first truly international school offering a learning environment of exceptional quality and vigour", Mr Vijaya Raghavan said.

The school opens in July this year and admissions for classes from LKG to VIII for the academic year 2003-04 have commenced.

It is set on a 12-acre campus on a windswept hilltop on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram.

An independent co-educational school with a blend of boarders, weekday boarders and day scholars, TIS is modelled on international schools across the world.

TIS offers a globally recognised curriculum including that of the International Baccalaureate Organisation Programme, University of Cambridge O & A level Programmes and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations Programme.

With regular evaluations being part of the learning process at TIS, the school has harnessed technology to evolve a unique online interactive system to enable parents to access the progress graphs of their children via the Internet and to discuss improvement procedures with relevant teachers through secure chat sessions.

Regular parent-teacher forums are also scheduled throughout the year, to be presided over by the Principal.

Faculty at TIS are chosen on the basis of specialisation in relevant areas, rich international experience and teaching and mentoring skills of a high order.

Carefully handpicked Indian teachers with international exposure will handle mathematics and science subjects.

Trained teachers from the respective countries will teach English and foreign languages to enable the students to pick up the subtle nuances of language.

Admissions to the school are open to children of residents in India, including foreign nationals with a valid resident visa, NRIs and foreign nationals subject to their obtaining a student visa.

The School Governing Council comprises accomplished professionals from different fields such as Dr Mohan Gopal, Director, National Law School of India; Mr S. Mahalingam, Executive Vice-President, TCS, Mr Philip Mathew, Managing Editor and Director, Malayala Manorama and Dr M.S. Valiathan, Chairman, Indian Science Academy.

Mr George M. Thomas, President of TIS, is a Gulf-based entrepreneur and Managing Director of the Kenton group of companies.
