Internet Upgraded IP version ready for trials Our Bureau
Dignitaries busy at their laptops preparing for their presentations at the 3rd Global IPv6 summit in Bangalore on Thursday.
BANGALORE, Jan 23 STAGE set for carrying out IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) trials in India. "We feel that awareness has reached the saturation level among the industry and 2003 will be a year of trials," said Mr Hemanth Dattatreya, President, IPv6 Forum, India, which is on the forefront of creating awareness about IPv6. IPv6 is an upgrade of the existing Internet Protocol - IPv4, which is fast running out of global IP address space to accommodate the increasing number of Web sites. The IP addresses are currently being rationed and with increasing connectivity, it is expected that by 2010 all the available addresses will be consumed. The need for more address space is being driven by the increasing use of small access devices. IPv6 has more address spaces than IPv4. India has hardly 2.2 million address spaces allocated as against a population of one billion. "The increasing connectivity and Internet connections is set to drive the demand for address, which would create problems, unless the IPv6 is implemented," he said. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the IPv6 Forum India has been successful in roping in the Government, that is, the Ministry of Communications and IT, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) apart from software vendors and the networking equipment manufacturers under one umbrella to chalk out action plan for the deployment of IPv6 in India, he told Business Line, on the sidelines of Third IPv6 Global Summit. As part of the trials, a showcase network would be set up in Bangalore, which would provide link to Europe and Japan, where IPv6 was already being deployed, he said. Mr Latif Ladid, President, IPv6 Forum, said deployment of IPv6 was must for India to protect its investment in communications. Countries such as China and Japan were way ahead in terms of deploying IPv6 and India should emulate them, he said.
