COIMBATORE, Dec. 26

RIDING the rapid growth and modernisation in the health care industry, BOC Medical, medical division of BOC India, which is part of the UK-based BOC Group Worldwide, is planning to introduce a basket of products and services, for both - the home segment and the industry.

The company is introducing a potent analgesic - `Entonox' - a homogeneous gas containing nitrous oxide and oxygen in equal proportion - in India at the ISA GOLDCON 2002 - the Golden Jubilee conference of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists - at PSG Hospitals here. The four-day conference is slated to begin on Friday, when this product is to be introduced.

BOC is sponsoring the conference.

Entonox, according to Mr Shekhar Trivedi, National Sales Manager (Medical), BOC India Ltd, was recently cleared by the Controller of Drugs for introduction in India.

The product, he said was very popular in the UK, considering its use in a wide variety of pain control applications, from dentistry, during childbirth and wound dressing to injury at a sports event.

Thanks to the efforts of the gynaecologists and others in the medical fraternity who managed to impress the dire need for such a product in the country, it had now been cleared for sale, Mr Trivedi said.

"This can be used alone or as a coadjuvant with opiates or oral analgesia. It can be self-administered through a hand-held device and it works instantly. The patient always has total control over the process," he explained.

He disclosed that a professional agency - ORG Marg - was engaged to assess the market requirement for this product. "There is a huge market for this potent analgesic. We have six plants located across the country to take care of the supplies. Initially, we intend to market it directly."

Reverting to management of total gas delivery system in hospitals, he said that BOC Medical was popularising this concept to relieve the hospital administration of the burden of taking care of the technical aspects of this highly specialised field.

About 72 hospitals have been brought under the BOC Medical net with regard to management of total gas delivery systems over the last 10 years.

"We intend to address this line by bringing at least 25 to 30 hospitals each year, under our net. It is cost-effective and highly efficient, particularly for big hospitals," he said.

He explained that BOC Medical lent its expertise in providing a remote sensing mechanism - Telemetry - to make medical gases managements in hospitals, online.

"Nothing is left to chance. It is fully managed by us," he added.

Taking this initiative further, and to reinforce safe handling practices in the system, BOC Medical also conducted `Technical Audit' of the entire medical gas delivery system, he said and pointed out that PSG Hospitals had taken advantage of this service.

For the home segment, he said BOC Medical introduced home respiratory services through the `New Life Oxygen Concentrator' for long-term oxygen therapy. The equipment ensures uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen and was particularly recommended for patients suffering from pulmonary disorders.

BOC Medical was poised to launch more products shortly, he said.
