Strike outside Kinfra park hampers work

Our Bureau

KOCHI, Dec. 20

WITH well over 3,000 coir workers from various parts of the State agitating outside the gates of Kinfra Export Promotion Industrial Park in Kochi, work at the Kera Fibre Tex came to a halt on Friday.

Though the agitating coir workers dispersed around noon, 8,000 sq m of coir PVC mat production of Kera Fibre Tex was lost for the day. "There are strict and severe penalty clauses for forfeiting export orders," company sources said.

"Though strikes are banned within the premises of the Kinfra Park, there is nothing that we can do when such agitations are held outside the gates," officials said.

With just 10 units under various stages of completion at the new park, the current agitation will send wrong signals to industrialists and potential investors outside the State, sources said.

The strike was organised under the leadership of CPI(M) leaders, Mr E. Balanandan and Mr M.A. Baby, with thousands of coir workers from the Alappuzha district participating.
