`Rabi crop yield to be down 50 pc'

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: The effects of the drought this year has not fully passed, according to Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner, Mr B.S. Patil. "The feeling that the rabi crop will be good is not right," he warned. "We must not expect to harvest 100 per cent of the crop. If we get 50 per cent, we should be happy," he said.

It is true that the rabi crop looks good, with 105 per cent of the area covered, compared to last year, but this was because of the good rains in September and October.

It needs one more good rain for production to be good, but that hasn't happened so far, Mr Patil said. This is similar to what happened with the kharif crop. The good rains in June saw a large area covered, but subsequent drought conditions resulted in widespread crop loss.
