Events Farmers' meet on January 3 Our Bureau
COIMBATORE, Dec. 19 THE Federation of All-Farmers' Associations has reiterated its demand for payment of Rs 217.66 crore arrears to sugarcane farmers. The amount, the Federation President, Mr K.P. Ramalingam, noted was due on the cane procured by the 16 co-operative sugar mills in the Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and Dharmapuri districts. "The accumulated dues was after the Government's fixation of the State Advisory Price for procurement of cane," he said. Addressing presspersons after a Consultative Meeting of the Federation, he said that the Farmers' Protection Conference slated for January 3 at Coimbatore would bring out a list of problems afflicting the farming community. He said the Federation proposed to seek an appointment with the State's Chief Minister before the Farmers' Conference and urge her to continue with the power tariff benefits to the farmers, settle cane arrears, withdraw the cut in milk procurement price etc. Mr Ramalingam warned of an agitation "if our demands are not met, or if the Government decides to take an anti-farmer stand".
