`No harm from GM crops'

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: Cultivation of transgenic crops in India should be viewed positively with a scientific perspective, said the Director of the Department of Biotechnology, Mr S.R. Rao.

Mr Rao, who was here to participate in the inaugural function of the Second Pulse Network Meeting of Indo-Swiss Collaboration in Biotechnology organised at the Madurai Kamaraj University here said ethical factors associated with risks in raising transgenic plants will be looked into by a three-tier committee.

He said that there was no scientific basis to prove the theory of cross-pollination. On the other hand, the transgenic crops were safe for human consumption, he observed.

He emphasised that transgenic crops were time-tested for their safety, and referred to the six year duration taken for approving Bt cotton seeds in the country.
