IFAD chief coming

NEW DELHI, Nov. 26

MR Lennart Bage, President, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is arriving here on Wednesday on a week-long visit to India.

IFAD is a specialised agency of the United Nations headquartered in Rome and supports poverty alleviation initiatives all over the developing world. In India, IFAD has eight current projects amounting to about Rs 1,000 crore.

Mr Bage's visit is intended to reiterate IFAD's commitment to the Government's poverty eradication measures. The Union Finance Minister is a Governor on the IFAD Governing Council.

Mr Bage, during his visit, is scheduled to meet senior Government officials, UN and bilateral partners as also undertake field visits to project sites in Chattisgarh and Maharashtra. In Chennai, he will attend a regional poverty strategy symposium and deliver `The Hindu Millennium Lecture'.
