Matsyafed scheme for fishermen in distress

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Matsyafed, the apex federation of fishermen's co-operatives, has devised a Rs 12-crore scheme for debt-ridden fishermen who are finding it difficult to service loans availed from various financial institutions for building houses and procuring various tools.

An official spokesman said that the scheme will benefit those whose houses have been destroyed due to natural calamity, who have been rendered widows or are stricken with terminal illness. Under the scheme, penal interest payable on outstanding dues on loans availed for constructing houses and acquiring fishing equipment will be completely waived.

Application for availing these benefits, supported by documentary evidence, should be submitted at the district offices of Matsyafed before November 30.The applications can be submitted through the primary co-operative societies as well. A decision on the applications thus received will be finalised at the district/zonal-level adalats to be held from the second week of December, the spokesman said.
