Now artists can lay hands on the best

KOLKATA, Nov. 12

INDIAN artists can now readily lay their hands on art materials manufactured by Daler-Rowney of the UK.

Galerie 88, a premier art gallery here, has been appointed the sole selling agent of Daler-Rowney products in India.

Stating this at a news conference held here today, Ms Supriya Banerjee, Proprietor of Galerie 88, said the Daler-Rowney range of products would be imported and sold all over the country. For this purpose, Galerie 88 has opened an art materials division called ''Art Gallery 88''. This division will import the art materials and sell the same in India. The art material will also be retailed through Galerie 88.

Ms Banerjee said these quality art materials -- graded as artists' grade, students' grade and amateur grade -- were being imported into the country in an organised manner for the first time. The Daler-Rowney range of art materials is among the top-three international art material brands. The size of the domestic market for art materials has been pegged at Rs 5 crore annually. "There are about 3,000-5,000 working artists in the country. Besides, there are about 10,000 students enrolled in various art colleges located across the country. This will provide us the critical mass that we are looking for,'' she said.

Veteran artists Mr Suhash Roy and Mr Kanchan Dasgupta, who were present on the occasion, said the intensity and transparency of Daler-Rowney watercolours were very evident. Besides, the use of Daler-Rowney art materials enhances the longevity of the finished product. "The demand for works of art is on the rise. Easy access to quality art materials will go a long way in enhancing the beauty of the final product which, in turn, pleases art lover all the more,'' they said.

Daler-Rowney has a 200-year-old heritage as a manufacturer of quality art products. It has production facilities in Berkshire near London, China and the Dominican Republic. Its products have been used by artists like Turner and Constable.
