Knowledge gap on transgenic tech regretted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Nov. 7

RENOWNED agricultural scientist, Dr M.S. Swaminathan, has said the pace of progress in the evolution of transgenic technologies is proving to be much faster than the evolution of societal understanding of their implications.

This mismatch between technological progress and societal understanding of change is at the heart of the ongoing conflict between the ``do'' and ``doom'' environmentalists, Dr Swaminathan observed in his C.V. Raman Memorial Lecture on `Science, and shaping India's food and livelihood security systems' organised here jointly by the Swadeshi Science Movement and the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI).

``This is why I have been pleading for a broad-based National Commission on Genetic Modification for Food Security with representation from various fora,'' he said.
