Bill Gates thrust this time is healthcare

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Nov. 5

THIS time, it's philanthropy and not business that is high on Mr Bill Gates' agenda when he comes to India.

During his November 11-14 visit to the country, Mr Gates, Chairman and Chief Software Architect, Microsoft Corporation, will announce a number of steps to support various healthcare initiatives.

During his stay in India, he is expected to announce a `long-term, strategic commitment' to support and contain HIV/AIDS in the country, according the Gates Foundation Web site.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will also provide a $25-million grant to the Partnership Project in Andhra Pradesh, a joint effort between the Children's Vaccine Programme and the Government of Andhra Pradesh, to introduce Hepatitis B vaccine and strengthen the overall infant immunisation programme in the State.

The foundation's Global Health Programme is focused on reducing global health inequities by accelerating the development, deployment and sustainability of health interventions that will save lives and dramatically reduce the disease burden in developing countries.

Mr Gates is scheduled to visit New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore during his four-day stay.
