Framework on anvil for global ayurveda drive

Vinson Kurian

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct. 22

THE World Ayurveda Congress (WAC) 2002, to be held in Kochi, proposes to establish the framework for a transcontinental drive for promoting Indian systems of medicine, especially ayurveda, through recourse to information technology and networking.

According to a concept paper prepared by Dr S. Rajasekharan,

Head, Ethno Medical Department, Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), the project aims at developing a global information network on primary healthcare packages for Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and the Oceanic region.

Called Continental Ayurvedic Primary Health Care Packages (CAPHCP), the project involves development of 50 scientifically designed software packages suitable for each continent and is expected to take 10 years from formulation to execution.

The concept paper was formally unveiled at a function here.

The network, according to Dr Rajasekharan, will address various aspects of healthcare including prevention, promotion, correction and cure through a holistic approach based on dietary regimen (hita ahara), activities for conditioning the physical, mental and spiritual faculties (hita vihara), and application of medicine (oushadha) to deal with specific diseases.

CAPHCP is a long-term project envisaged on primary healthcare of the people of each continent of the world by applying ayurvedic principles in a holistic, practical and sustainable manner.

The CAPHCP software packages are diverse in nature comprising general, special, disease-specific, environmental health and participatory primary healthcare packages.

These are specially designed for common people to take their healthcare at the primary level by themselves and also to disseminate such knowledge.

According to Dr Rajasekharan, the project objectives are drawing up a roadmap on continental ayurveda primary healthcare packages aided by communication and information technology, formulating CAPHCP by applying ayurvedic principles, developing software on CAPHCP suitable to each continent by conducting field study, workshop, symposiums and demonstrations, and establishing a global network for implementing CAPHCP.

The project seeks to establish the role of ayurveda to promote sustainable healthcare at global level by integrating its untapped potential into the planning process of each country to promote healthy and productive citizens.

This will have direct impact on the food, health and economic security of the country.

The congress will witness involvement of people from diverse fields such ethno-medical experts, traditional healers from the local health traditions including tribal healers, indigenous knowledge experts, modern medical experts, nutritionists, sociologists, economists, botanists, agriculture experts, IT experts, administrators, planners, policy makers, forest officials, NGOs and an array of funding agencies.
