Our Bureau

BANGALORE: Biotechnology major, Monsanto, has roped in the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore to work on identifying `drought tolerant genes,' even as its scientists intensify research on drought-tolerant crops.

UAS, Bangalore has started a new project `Gene Research for Drought Tolerance" which has been supported by a $40,000 grant from the philanthropic Monsanto Fund of Monsanto, said a company press release. The project, lasting for two years, is aimed at identifying genes capable of making crops drought tolerant.

While, Monsanto scientists at St Louis, US are engaged in identifying genes, which enhance a plant's drought tolerance, especially in crops such as corn, soya and rice, the details of the project in Bangalore are not known as the UAS officials were not available for comment.
