Cotton Labour costs plague cotton cultivation in South: Study G. Gurumurthy
COIMBATORE, Sept. 30 LABOUR costs have surpassed material costs in southern cotton cultivations, according to an analysis done by the Cotton Development and Research Association of the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA-CDRA). While the labour cost was higher at 70 .01 per cent than material cost at 29.99 per cent in all cultivation centres taken for analysis, operations as plant protection, after-cultivation, manures and manuring and harvesting accounted for major share in cost of cultivation. The major share in cultivation cost is accounted by plant protection at 18.9 per cent followed by after-cultivation cost at 16.40 per cent and the manures and manuring cost 16.16 per cent. The analysis was done in five main summer cotton growing tracts for 2001 and five winter cotton centres in the 2001-02 season. The centres covered in summer crop analysis were Theni, Villipuram, Panruti, Kumbakonam and Konganapuram while those taken into account for winter crop were Attur, Theni, Udumalpet, Bijapur (Karnataka) and Guntur (Andhra Pradesh). The mean cost of cultivation (during summer 2001) per acre for pure crop of cotton ranged between Rs 6,686 and Rs 10,843. The net return realised was maximum in Konganapuram centre (Rs 13,264) followed by Bijapur (Rs 9,600) and Theni (Rs 7,246). The return on investment was minimum at Villupuram (32.5 per cent) and maximum at Konganapuram (198 per cent), the SIMA-CDRA analysis says. The cost of cultivation per acre during winter 2001-02 was maximum for crop raised in Bijapur (Rs 13,037) followed by Udumalpet at Rs 12,580, Attur (Rs 11,292), Theni (Rs 10,062), Dharapuram (Rs 9,925) and Guntur (Rs 8,789). The net return was maximum at Theni (Rs 6,467) and minimum at Konganapuram (Rs 1,004). The return on investment ranged from 19.8 per cent to 64.3 per cent.Meanwhile, the new office bearers elected for SIMA-CDRA for 2002-03 include Mr J. Thulasidharan of the Rajaratna Mills Pvt Ltd as Chairman and Mr V. Sathyanathan of Palani Andavar Cotton and Synthetic Spinners Ltd, and Mr P.D. Damodaran of Durairaj Mills Pvt Ltd, as Vice-Chairmen.
