Arts & Crafts Dastkar: Keeping rural crafts alive Our Bureau
BANGALORE, Sept. 25 WHEN Dastkar opens its show here tomorrow, it will be its biggest ever crafts bazaar. Fifty rural artisans from a dozen States are showcasing their colours, skills and motifs at the craft bazaar this year, according to Ms Shruti J. Mittal and Ms Deepali Varma of the Delhi-based NGO. The popular fair is returning to Bangalore for the eighth consecutive time, bringing a rich fare of craft products made by rural artisans to suit urban lifestyles. Garments, soft furnishings, toys, gift-articles, folk paintings, jewellery and pottery are some of the products offered at the bazaar. Coming directly from the crafts people are collection that includes popular bandhini and patchwork products from Rajasthan, Kutchi garments, home furnishings from Gujarat, tribal jewellery and stone carvings from Orissa, eco-friendly leather lampshades and the Ethikopakka wooden toys from Andhra Pradesh, sculpted iron animal figurines, weaves and vegetable dyed Bagh-printed fabric from Madhya Pradesh, embossed Bengali leather and tussar weaves and papier mache from Bihar lambani and kasuti items from Karnataka, angora shawls and glazed pottery from Himachal Pradesh and crafts from UP. Dastkar was formed in 1981 when six women came together to help out struggling traditional artisans and bring out their labour as a viable and vital part of the economy. After all, handicrafts are the second largest source of rural income in the country, which has 14 million artisans. The group has grown into a 20-strong organisation with a sister body in Hyderabad and a project office in Ranthambhore. Dastkar works with some 75 traditional crafts groups in 12 States, according to Ms Mittal and Ms Varma. Its aim is to make them self-reliant and even grow independent of organisations like it. The show in Bangalore will be on at Safina Plaza till September 30.
