CHENNAI, Sept. 19

THE YR Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education (YRG CARE) has extended its health centre at the Voluntary Health Services (VHS) hospital to include an additional intensive care unit, learning resource unit, training and research data centre.

According to the Director of YRG CARE, Dr Suniti Solomon, the centre has grown due to collaborative support from VHS, the Madras Heritage Round Table No. 124 (MHRT) and corporate houses.

The corporates that have contributed to the venture include Larsen and Toubro — ECC, BPL, Finolex Cables, and Johnson Lifts.

Mr Sunil Ralan, Trustee of MHRT, said their association wanted to work with YRG CARE since it provided the entire spectrum of AIDS care.

This includes diagnosing, counselling, caring and treating the patients.

According to Dr Kenneth H. Mayer, the work of YRG CARE has attracted institutions abroad since it includes a wide base of professionals.

Dr N.S. Murali, Honorary Secretary of VHS, said that his institution got the second 5-year extension for the project, supported by the US Agency for International Development, for creating awareness on AIDS.
